Developing body awareness is an amazing benefit that swimmers can gain from a yoga practice.
In a Swimming-Specific Yoga practice we always begin with a body scan. This allows the athletes the time to understand how their body feels at the start of the practice. This gives athletes a baseline to understand how their bodies respond throughout the practice and also strengthens the mind-body connection.
Another huge benefit of doing a body scan at the beginning of the practice is to give athletes the opportunity to practice a mindset of non-judgement. Creating an ability to look at experiences in a non-judgemental way has been shown not only to improve performance, but also improve an individual's mental health.
