A great way to warm up and loosen your legs up when you begin a walk is by throwing a racquetball ball up high and far enough away from your body so that it gets to bounce two or three times before you can catch up to it. You instinctively chase it and your legs get the feel of faster movement. It is kind of like running a sprint before a jog. I find it helps start me off at a faster walking pace than if I had not begun with this technique. Do this for a minute or two, then switch to regular ball bouncing or some of the best long distance walking techniques from my book. Also if you begin to slow down, perhaps after going uphill for a bit, this technique can jumpstart you again.
